FAQ

Straight answers: with next steps

If you are stuck, start with detection and driver health, then isolate one change at a time. These answers are educational and may vary by GPU vendor generation.

If your question is “nothing works yet”

These pages go deeper than a single FAQ answer: use them when you need a checklist, definitions, or a full walkthrough.

Is MSI Afterburner safe to download? ⌄

Yes: confirm the installer is digitally signed when your OS prompts you. Treat unknown mirrors as high risk: repacks can bundle adware.

Why does Afterburner say it cannot detect my GPU? ⌄

Common causes are disabled GPUs in multi-GPU systems, driver installs that didn’t complete, remote-desktop sessions that block direct access, or laptops with restricted APIs. Start by rebooting, confirming the GPU works in Device Manager, reinstalling the GPU driver cleanly, then reopening Afterburner. If sliders remain unavailable, read the startup & detection article for a structured checklist.

Do I need to run Afterburner as administrator? ⌄

Sometimes. Fan control on certain motherboards/GPU combinations may require elevated rights. If you only monitor, admin mode may not be necessary. If fan changes never apply, test admin launch once, then document what changed for your system.

What is OC Scanner and should I use it? ⌄

OC Scanner is an automated helper that proposes a curve on supported NVIDIA GPUs. It can save time, but it is not a guarantee of stability in every workload. Treat the result as a baseline, then validate with game-like loads and watch memory thermals and power limits. AMD users should follow vendor-specific guidance; not every feature maps 1:1.

My PC crashes right after I hit Apply: what now? ⌄

Reboot first: many unstable clocks revert after restart if you didn’t enable persistence the way your system requires. Then reduce memory offset first (memory errors often crash faster than small core changes), restore defaults, and change one knob at a time. If you enabled aggressive undervolting, widen the curve slightly. Too tight a VF curve causes hard reboots under transient loads.

Why do my fans pulse or ramp constantly? ⌄

Fan curves with steep steps near a temperature threshold can oscillate as the GPU crosses the line repeatedly. Smooth the curve, add hysteresis if available, and prefer gradual slopes in the most common temperature band for your games.

RTSS overlay does not show: why? ⌄

Confirm RTSS is running, the game isn’t blocking third-party overlays, and you’re not in a mode that disables injection. Some anti-cheat titles restrict overlays entirely. Start with RTSS’s application profile list and try borderless windowed mode for testing.

Will Afterburner void my warranty? ⌄

Manufacturers differ. Overclocking and voltage modifications can affect warranty depending on region and evidence of damage. This site does not provide legal advice; when in doubt, assume conservative settings and keep thermals well within spec.

Can I use Afterburner on a laptop? ⌄

Often yes, but laptops vary widely: MUX switches, OEM power limits, and locked voltage tables can limit what you can change. Expect more throttling behavior and smaller tuning headroom than desktop cards.

What’s the difference between Afterburner and “MSI Center”? ⌄

Afterburner is a focused tuning/monitoring tool with broad GPU support. MSI Center is a broader MSI ecosystem hub for motherboards, laptops, and features like Mystic Light on supported hardware. They solve overlapping but not identical problems.

How do I reset everything cleanly? ⌄

Use Afterburner’s reset to defaults, disable automatic profile loading temporarily, and remove unstable startup tasks if you configured Windows to launch profiles. For driver-level issues, a clean GPU driver reinstall (with a sensible cleanup process) is the boring fix that works surprisingly often.

Why does my overlay hurt performance? ⌄

Overlays add CPU/GPU work for drawing and polling. Usually the cost is small, but on CPU-bound games it can matter. Reduce overlay graph frequency, disable unused graphs, and test with overlay off to isolate.

What is the difference between MSI Afterburner and RTSS? ⌄

Afterburner is mainly for monitoring, tuning, and applying limits/curves on many GPUs. RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) is a separate companion focused on on-screen display, frametime graphs, and frame limiting in many setups. You often install both: Afterburner for hardware interaction, RTSS for how stats are drawn on top of games. RTSS has its own application list and injection rules.

Should I use Kombustor (or other stress tests) to validate an overclock? ⌄

Synthetic stress tools can find gross instability quickly, but they are not a perfect substitute for your real games. Use them as one signal, then validate with workloads that match what you play (shader compilation, VRAM-heavy scenes, long sessions). If a stress test passes but games crash, trust the game and back off the last change you made.

Why do readings look wrong on multi-monitor or hybrid-GPU laptops? ⌄

Multiple displays and iGPU+dGPU configurations change which GPU is active, which API is in use, and what power state you are in. Some counters only make sense for the discrete GPU under load. If numbers jump or look idle while gaming, confirm which GPU is driving the game, whether you are on battery, and whether the laptop OEM restricts tuning in that mode. The detection guide covers common laptop quirks.

How do I keep my profile after reboot or driver update? ⌄

Afterburner can load saved profiles on startup when configured to do so. But driver updates can still invalidate assumptions. Keep a human-readable note of stable offsets and export or duplicate profiles before big changes. After a driver reinstall, verify defaults, re-apply gradually, and do not assume an old profile is safe without a short validation pass.

Does MSI Afterburner work with AMD GPUs as well as NVIDIA? ⌄

On many AMD cards you still get monitoring and common tuning controls, but which sliders appear depends on your GPU generation and what the driver exposes. NVIDIA-specific helpers like OC Scanner do not translate one-to-one to AMD. If controls are missing, treat it as a support matrix question for your exact hardware and driver branch before assuming the install is broken.

Should I enable “Start with Windows” for Afterburner? ⌄

Only after your settings are proven stable. Startup loading can apply curves, fan behavior, or overclocks before you have watched temperatures yourself. Beginners should launch manually until a profile survives real games. If you use startup loading, keep a fast path back to defaults and avoid stacking multiple apps that fight for the same fans or power behavior.
